The machine gunner is the most effective and dominant operator of the team in small unit organizations. They use 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm depending on the mission purpose or the ammunition used by other operators in the team. They can use large diameter (7.62mm) explosive, destructive or incendiary ammunition depending on the target evaluation. Additionally, taking into account the ammunition diameter used by other team operators, 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm ammunition can be preferred in order to facilitate ammunition supply within the team.
